He was named International PWD Stud 2009
at Crufts based on the quality of his offspring in Europe. I hope to
breed his granddaughter, Amber, to him this spring. Jack is 12 this
month and still going strong. This is a close line breeding on Jack who
has the most impressive credentials of any stud in the PWD community.
The puppies will probably be mostly black with a bit of white. Families
interested in a puppy from this litter should contact me by using the
"contact Cheryl" link on the right of this post or by e-mail at
drcwinchell@pol.net.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-41039913725875407762010-03-01T15:44:00.002-05:002010-03-01T15:52:13.621-05:00Dash Away! All the puppies have families except Dancer (second from left) who is waiting for just the right family to come along. These sweet and affectionate puppies were quieter than my previous litters.
Because of the deep snow and a power outage at my home that lasted 6 days, the puppies had a great adventure when we had to move in with friends. Along with the puppies, we brought the five adult dogs. Added to the resident 2 dogs and cat, we had a real menagerie! Thank goodness for good friends....
Cheryl

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-46200872293434827692010-01-09T14:04:00.003-05:002010-01-09T14:29:39.515-05:00Puppy QuestionsSince posting the pictures of the "reindeer", I have received a number
of posts to my blog inquiring about them. Not only do I not allow posts
to this blog, but the sender's e-mail is not included when the comments
are forwarded to me. If you want to contact me about these puppies or
a future litter, there is a contact link on the right of this page that says:
"contact Cheryl". As with most PWD breeders, I place each puppy in the
home that I feel is most suitable and don't accept deposits on a specific
puppy because of its markings. There are so many more important
considerations in placing a puppy than the color of its coat.

I try to keep puppies in the greater Washington D.C. area and only make
exceptions if the puppy is going to a dedicated show home or the buyer
already has one of my dogs and has had the nerve to move away from the
area! I do a lot of owner mentoring and I like to see my dogs after they are
placed. If folks are more than 100 miles from me, the likelihood of my seeing
the dogs and being able to maintain good follow up on them is nil. Since
knowing the long term results is key to improving one's breeding program,
I discourage distant buyers and try to refer them to breeders closer to their
homes.
The best resource for finding a puppy is to go to the puppy listing
at www.pwdca.com All puppies listed on that site are bred by people who
have signed a six page agreement with the parent club guaranteeing that
they will do all appropriate health testing on the breeding pair and stand
behind their animals if there is a problem for the life of the dog. There are
many fine breeders who do not use the puppy listing as well. If the puppy
is not on the breeders' list, a buyer should expect to see original documents
confirming the health testing on the parents before purchasing from the
breeder. There are some people who breed just for the money and don't
care about the dogs they produce. Fortunately, the majority of the PWD
breeders are careful and conscientious. Ask the breeder to provide you
with references and then call them.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-26931524462542968232010-01-01T12:15:00.002-05:002010-01-01T12:16:06.514-05:00ON DANCER!<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; One puppy, the first
born, is snow white with black ears. The rest are
black with tuxedo markings and one looks like the
daddy, Deuce. Robust, weighing 12 to 16 ounces, all
are vigorous and thriving. New mom Amber is calm
and attentive. Previous moms Honey Bear and Red
are curious and peeved at being excluded from the
excitement. And I am bushed after the 7 hour whelp
even though that was very efficient on Amber's part.
She is going to be a great mom.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-11674029700365378982009-12-24T15:22:00.002-05:002009-12-24T15:33:20.870-05:00The Whelping Box is Ready!Amber is due to have her puppies this weekend. A visit to the
veterinarian for prewhelp X-ray shows probably 10 babies.
Because there are so many and the horns of the uterus are super-
imposed on one another in a lateral X-ray, it's hard to be exact.
But it is a large litter for a PWD. The average litter is 7 puppies.
My husband and I just assembled the whelping box this afternoon
and are awaiting the big event. Despite the holiday, wonderful
reproduction veterinarian Dr. Robert Dove will be there for me if
we run into trouble getting all the puppies out. His staff told me,
"Oh sure, we've done C-sections on Christmas before. Just call if you
need us." I am sleeping better knowing he will be there for my girl.
She comes from a line of great whelpers and great mothers so I am
optimistic that beautiful puppies will soon be lined up and
suckling on a happy mom.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-81348489401070038752009-12-01T21:53:00.003-05:002009-12-01T22:04:22.554-05:00Yes, we are expecting puppies. It looks like we will be having puppies on Christmas day this year. Amber is
5 weeks post insemination and she appears to be pregnant. Most breeders
confirm pregnancy with a sonogram at about 4 weeks. It is expensive and
inaccurate to count puppies. Generally, if you wait a week, the pregnancy is
obvious. Prior to delivery I often get an abdominal film. Occasionally it is
possible to get an accurate puppy count but the main reason for doing a
film is to see if there are only a few large puppies. In that situation, an
elective C-section might be the best course. The average litter of 6 or 7
puppies weighing about 12 ounces each generally can be whelped without
major difficulties . So, now I know how I'll be spending my holidays!

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-34893575448223560362009-10-11T07:28:00.004-04:002009-12-01T22:05:41.957-05:00CH. All except one show girl has found a home. An independent evaluation was done by professional handler Jo Ann Charnik who felt that 8 of these puppies were show quality. This is probably the most exceptional litter that I have had to date. The stud, 11 year old BISS Watermark Toby's Black Jack, obviously still has what it takes to produce beautiful offspring. My girl Red did an outstanding job, too. The puppies all have marvelous temperaments and all passed their CERF examinations as well establishing that they have healthy eyes. There
are 7 boys and 3 girls. The sire is CH BISS Watermark Toby's Black Jack.
All the puppies appear to be healthy and vigorous. Each puppy has a white
chest and white on the front paws. Keeping track of who is who is going to
be a challenge! It is always exciting to have every puppy survive the whelp
and for things to go smoothly. She is
just over two years old, a member of the 2007 litter born on Valentine's
Day.
I hope to breed her for the first time later this year to an appropriate stud.
The handler will miss her being in the ring as Amber was a joy to show. She
would act like she owned the ring and then self stack for the judge. I'm glad
to have her back home where she belongs. Meanwhile, her sister Calypso
has just started showing and came in second on a four point major her
second weekend out. Of course, there are no points for being second but
being in the ribbons with that much competition was very encouraging.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-81815806294139355452009-03-09T19:53:00.005-04:002009-03-09T20:16:24.830-04:00Debut of the Red/Dickens Puppies

The Red litter puppies at 8 weeks of age are pictured above. They were born on December 9th, 2008. The nine beautiful and healthy puppies went to their new homes in February. All the puppies have lovely temperaments. Six of the nine were independently evaluated and deemed show prospects. The new owners describe their puppies as "fearless". This litter should certainly promote Dickens as an up and coming stud. Because I was so pleased with what my little Red girl produced, she will be bred a second time this year. This time she will be matched up with CH Watermark Toby's Black Jack, a wonderful old boy who will be turning 11 this year.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-88802485200871044902008-09-13T13:08:00.004-04:002008-10-14T06:46:01.294-04:00Blue Run's Noel Deck the Halls: DanielThis is Daniel taking Winners Dog in Raleigh on
Labor Day. She is a spirited girl who is very agile. Red is an enthusiastic therapy dog who is very popular with patients. She has a date to meet Dickens, BISS CH Ebb Tide's Poetry In Motion (at right). You can see he was aptly named. He is a tight curly black boy who is currently the # 3 PWD in the USA.

Like her sister Honey Bear, Red has all the right markers to suggest her pups will have good health with a 1.5 fold decrease in the likelihood of producing puppies with Addison's Disease.
Red is an Irish marked wavy. Some of the puppies may get her flashy markings but most will probably have less white. Red has more drive than my other dogs and I anticipate her offspring will excel in agility and water work. Dickens is also very clever so this could be a group of very bright and challenging puppies. The anticipated whelp date is December 9, 2008.

PS. Nine beautiful puppies arrived on schedule. There are 6 girls and 3 boys
and all are wavy with white paws and chests. No curlies! We must not carry
that gene as Dickens is a tight curly and we expected some curly puppies.
Nope.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-28206882323498007422008-06-03T19:25:00.004-04:002008-06-03T19:33:27.190-04:00Amber's First WinThis is a photo of Blue Run's She's a Caution on the occasion of her first win where she went best bitch and best of opposite sex. Amber was inexperienced in the show ring but got this win on her second weekend showing. She now stands still for the judge's inspection and shows with proper Porty attitude, tail up and wagging. We're very proud of our little girl and are looking forward to more wins this summer when she returns to the show ring. She is awfully cute, don't you think?
She is the first of the Valentine litter to put her paw in the ring.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-17340847792848370212008-05-14T06:45:00.004-04:002008-05-20T15:39:11.770-04:00Blue Run's She's a Caution, call name Amber
The first puppy from the Valentine litter is out on the show circuit as of this month.
Amber is an Irish marked wavy girl who has been training as a therapy dog since
December. She also participated in a George Alston Seminar in Troy, New York in
April where we practiced our ring presentation.
Like most dogs when they first start showing, Amber isn't too sure she likes the judges examining her with no introduction. If they were to first give her a tummy rub, she would follow them anywhere! But, that's not how it goes in the show ring.
Amber has already been in the ribbons on her first weekend showing but we don't expect any real wins (points) until she learns to stand quietly for the judges inspection. She is spending a whole month away from home with her handlers Jo Ann Charnic and Adam Thistle getting the show gig down pat. We really miss her.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-11973333953656576982008-03-05T20:24:00.003-05:002008-03-05T20:26:38.880-05:00The Noel Litter at 7 weeks of age

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1030869255238739133.post-74609598487927489602007-12-30T07:13:00.000-05:002007-12-30T08:00:33.508-05:00Is a Portuguese Water Dog the Right Dog for You?Every breeder has criteria for the type of home they find suitable for
one of their puppies. My criteria include no children under five years of
age and a family that has the time for the puppy. This usually means
that someone is home during the day or the puppy can go to work with
a family member. As I like to keep track of my pups, I prefer owners
who are geographically close. If a family is open to having a show pup,
or they want to do agility or water work with one of my dogs, they go to
the top of my waiting list.
Many people think they can manage this active breed plus a toddler
and do both justice. Others suggest puppy day care, dog walkers, and
various other measures so the dog won't explode waiting for them to
return home each day. These arrangements are often suggested by
people who are really anxious to have a dog but who really don't have
time for a dog of this breed. Portys were bred to be with their person
and to work with them on their boat. Portys want to be with you and
languish when neglected.
Few people who have not had a Porty realize how boisterous this breed
is, how mouthy (children will say "he bit me!") and how little they respect
your space (jumping up, the hit and run maneuver, the head butt).
Recently two of my little devils ran down a hill behind me taking me right
off my feet. I just got the cast off my leg the week the Noel Litter was born.
It is true, most people who have a Porty will never have another breed.
These dogs are so bright and have so much personality. There is a whole
lexicon of terms for Porty behavior that Porty owners know (the woo woos,
the shark, counter surfing, stuffy on walks, destuffing stuffies, etc.)
But Porty ownership is not for the faint of heart. I tell people if they want
a dog with the personality of a lab, get a lab. A Porty is a whole different
adventure.
There are about 1400 Porty puppies registered with the AKC each year.
Each of these puppies will have found their home placed by a dedicated
breeder who is going to be responsible to that puppy for the rest of its life.
We all have the policy that the dog returns to us regardless of reason or
age of the dog if the first owner is unable to keep the dog. It is the
antithesis of the ads you'll see in the newspapers for other breeds:"3 males,
2 females, cash only". Once you have your dog, they never want to see you
again. With a Porty, you get both a dog and a mentor for the life of the dog.

Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078776290611861528noreply@blogger.com0
